Essential Oils – How I Use Them In Everyday Life

If you’ve been reading on here for a while, you may know that a while back I began using Young Living essential oils to enhance my family’s health. It’s been almost 2 years now since I took the step to get started, and I’ve learned so much! I really do consider my oils to be an integral part of my family’s health care regimen.

Recently someone asked me to write down a list of what I think are the most useful oils and how I use them, and I figured I’d write it all down in a blog so that hopefully someone else finds it as useful as well!

This is a portion of my oils collection, which I keep on my kitchen counter where it is easily accessible. The other half are the lesser used oils, which I keep upstairs with my unopened stash. Yes, I have a stash. 😉

As a review, there are 3 ways to use Young Living essential oils. You can ingest them (some, not all – always check the label), apply them topically, and diffuse them. I only use Young Living oils – they have been in business for 20 years and are the only oils company around to offer the Seed to Seal promise.

Okay, so here’s how I use my oils!

First of all, I take a capsule daily of Thieves and Lemon. Usually 3 drops of each, with some carrier oil added in to dilute it a bit. When I have been diligent to remember this, I have stayed very healthy and chased off colds that have tried to take hold! When we do feel something trying to come on, I add in a couple drops of Frankincense for some added umph.

I do take other oils internally when the occasion arises – Copiaba for pain, Oregano for fighting bacteria, and others for specific things.

I try to diffuse daily.

You can diffuse most oils, and diffusing is one of the best ways to use oils for emotional health. Smelling the oils sends them right to the part of the brain that controls emotion, which I think is amazing!

I tend to diffuse oils that make me happy – I LOVE Christmas Spirit in the winter and Citrus Fresh in the summer. I use Valor when I’m feeling stressed, Joy and Orange when I’m feeling down. I also use my diffuser for physical health benefits as well – Thieves when diffused kills 99% of airborne bacteria! R.C. helps when someone has a cough or congestion, but I can’t stand the smell. 🙂

And that brings me to topical use, which is what I do the most often.

I apply oils topically for both physical and emotional benefits.

I have a pre-diluted bottle of Thieves that I put on my kids’ feet daily to help them stay healthy (like the capsules, only more kid-friendly). One of my kids struggles with focus feelings of helplessness during school, and I made a blend of oils to help him with that. (See my post here)

One of my favorite blends is called Valor, and I use it on myself and the kids when someone is feeling overwhelmed or anxious. I also use a blend called Motivation, which does what it says. 🙂

I always keep a bottle of Lavender handy! It’s great for burns (I have a tenancy to burn myself on a regular basis – I’m a bit of a clumsy cook), rashes, cuts, and even allergies. I also use Melrose or Melaleuca for skin issues (rashes, ringworm, etc).

Lemon is another one I keep on hand. In addition to using it in capsules, I use it for killing germs, clearing out sinuses, and it makes a mean glass of lemonade! 🙂

For muscle pain, I love a blend called Deep Relief. My husband was in a car accident a couple of years ago and has residual pain, and this really helps with that. It’s also great for those mornings you wake up with a kink in your neck or overdo it lifting boxes. 🙂

I also keep a few more accessible: DiGize for tummy troubles, R.C. and Raven for colds and congestion (the EO version of Vicks), and in the summer Purification for a non-toxic bug repellant and Carrot Seed for sunscreen.

Many of these oils are part of the Premium Starter Kit that you can get when you join Young Living. It comes with 11 oils: Lavender, Lemon, Peppermint, Panaway, Thieves, Purification, Melaleuca (Tea Tree), Frankincense, Citrus Fresh, Stress Away, and Joy. It also includes a diffuser so that you can get the full benefit from these fantastic oils!

Essential Oil Spotlight: Bedtime Rub Recipe!

I want to send a special shout-out to my fellow sleep deprived mamas! I honestly can’t think of another thing that affects my mama abilities so much as my sleep does (or lack thereof!). And by the time the kids’ bedtime comes around, I’m often exhausted myself and not in the mood for any of the battles that can so often accompany that time.

And so I present to you: my Bedtime Rub Recipe!

I use this coconut-oil based salve to rub on my boys’ backs every night as they lay in their beds. It does wonders – and I mean WONDERS – in helping them settle down to a peaceful night’s sleep. It helps me too – the aroma is soothing and calms me as I help them calm down. Total win-win if you ask me!

Here’s to a better night’s sleep for you and yours!!

** I recommend only using Young Living therapeutic grade essential oils for topical application.  There are no fillers, no additives (as there are in pretty much all other EO brands), and they are the only oils I trust for my family!

Here’s to a Healthier You in 2014!

Okay everyone, I have to share this awesome testimony of how Young Living essential oils have been rocking my world!

On the Thursday before Christmas, I started coming down with a cold. I could tell it was a bad one too – my chest felt tight and I had major body aches. You know that feeling, right? That knowing that your body is succumbing to something; that feeling of everything being “off”. I just knew that if I wasn’t serious about fighting this off, it would ruin our extended-family time that would be filling our days over the next week.

So, I immediately intensified my oils use. I started taking capsules formulated with oils to fight off sickness. I used oils on my chest and sinuses. And I used them on my kids too, seeing the same symptoms rearing their ugly heads in them too.

And my turnaround was remarkable!! I have never recovered from a cold like that before. I actually waited a while to share this because I wanted to make sure it wasn’t a fluke – it was that amazing. These kind of colds normally knock my out for a good week of coughing and blowing my nose. Here’s a brief timeline of how quickly I healed using my Young Living Essential Oils: On Thursday was when I felt it coming on. Friday I coughed sporadically throughout the day. Saturday it was already moving from my chest to my head with intense sinus congestion. Sunday it was loosening up and I was blowing my nose a bit. And that was IT! On Monday I felt almost completely back to normal – minimal sniffles, and that was IT. My kids all recovered quicker than normal as well, which is just as exciting, because having 5 kids in the house, colds can easily take us out for a few weeks by the time they cycle through everyone.

These oils work! They really do.

Now, I want to address a couple of concerns that you may have – concerns that I know I had when I first started looking into essential oils.

Concern One: How do essential oils work, anyway? How can they really be that powerful? Okay, let’s talk about this a bit. Essential oils work on a cellular level. They are extremely concentrated, with each drop of essential oil containing around 40 million-trillion molecules. We have 100 trillion cells in our body (which is a lot!), but one drop of oil has enough molecules to cover every cell in our body with 40,000 molecules! These molecules are made of compounds – Phenols, Monoterpenes, and Sesquiterpenes. These compounds clean our cells, deprogram bad information in our cells, and reprogram them with good information. (For a more detailed description of what these do, please read this article – she explains things in a clear, fun way! -Let’s Get Our Learn On-)

Concern Two: How much money will I have to spend?  So, first let me say that yes, I know that Young Living are on the expensive side when it comes to essential oils.  But there’s a good reason why I have chosen to trust Young Living with my family’s health instead of the local drugstore brand or another competitor – Quality.  There is no regulation for the labeling of essential oils – basically, if your bottle contains any essential oil at all, it can be labeled “100% Pure”.  Most essential oil companies use a cocktail of pure essential oil, fragrance, and chemical copycat fillers.  When it comes to oils, you get what you pay for.  If your bottle of oil only costs a couple of dollars, you can guarantee that it’s not a pure oil.

Young Living has been in business for over 20 years and is the only oils company to offer the Seed to Seal Guarantee. From Young Living:

We carefully monitor every step of the production of our oils from beginning to end through our unique Seed to Seal® process, ensuring the purity of each essential oil and protecting nature’s living energy in every bottle.

When I am using essential oils internally and topically (remember that anything that goes on your skin enters your body), I want to be sure that it’s both completely safe and most pure/powerful.  I look at the expense of Young Living oils as an investment into the health of me and my family, and it is totally paying off!  Instead of spending $30 in cold medicines that only mask symptoms and don’t actually help heal (and have tons of side effects!), I spent $50 in essential oils and got better in less than half the time (with no side effects)!

Here’s the thing. You will spend money on health for you and your family – it’s just a matter of how you spend it.  Essential oils are safe, effective, and created by God.  Pharmaceuticals are loaded with side effects, not so effective, and made in a laboratory.  How do you want to treat your body?  I am so thankful for God’s gift of essential oils and am SO excited about a healthier 2014!

Back-To-School With Essential Oils

This week is our first week of school, and I’ve been thinking about the best oils to use for the school year. In the above graphic, I’ve picked the most helpful oils, and in this post I will talk about how to use them.

Citrus Fresh & Lemon

Wake Up Happy

These oils can be diffused as your children get ready for their day. Or, if you don’t have a diffuser, you can use a stainless steel spray bottle with water, a touch of alcohol (to emmulsify), and several drops of oil, and spray it in their room as they’re waking up. You can also add Peppermint oil to the mix for those extra groggy morning!

Valor & Clarity

Focus & Learn

These are great oils to apply to your children as they get ready to head out the door (or begin their schoolwork if you homeschool). They can be applied in many places; I put them on the back of the neck (base of scull) or behind the ears.

Valor is awesome for helping your children feel confident and relieving anxiety. It’s been used to help kids with ADD/ADHD challenges as well. (I also love using this on myself when I’m feeling overwhelmed – it helps instantly!)

Clarity helps with focus and clear thinking. It can be a great help in many ways – you just might find yourself snagging some too!

Extra Homework Help

A little of this oil goes a long way! Recommended mostly for older students and parents because of its potency, Motivation gives you just what it claims! Have a lot to get done? This one will give you the boost you need!

ADD/ADHD Challenges

Do you have a child who struggles with attention and you want a solution that doesn’t require drugs? Vetiver oil has been proven to help with ADD/ADHD. Place a drop at the base of the big toes.

Stay Protected Against Germs

Thieves is one of those oils I never want to be without! I’ll save the story of this oil for another day, but let me tell you this. Thieves had been university tested to show that when properly diffused, Young Living Thieves oil kills 99.96% of airborne germs. It is powerful applied topically too. If you homeschool, you can diffuse this, especially during cold season. If your kids are leaving home for school, you can apply some to the base of their feet for immune support. And don’t forget to send a bottle of Thieves Hand Sanitizer in each of their backpacks!

Melaluca Alternifolia

Keep Lice Away

Head lice is a nasty issue you’d rather not have to deal with! While lice are becoming resistant to chemical shampoos, they cannot become resistant to essential oils. To help prevent these little buggers from taking up residence on your child’s head, mix a few drops of Melaluca Alternifolia (commonly known as tea tree oil) into your child’s shampoo once a week.

Lavender & Peace and Calming

Relax and Sleep Well

Do your children have a hard time winding down after a full and stimulating day? These oils are known for their ability to relax the body and mind and help induce sound sleep. Apply on the back of the neck or the big toe. Great for us adults too!

So there you have it – my top oil picks for back-to-school! Many of these oils are in the Everyday Oils kit from Young Living, which I highly recommend if you’re just getting started with essential oils. Others are sold individually. If you have any questions or want to order, send me a message!

My New Love – Essential Oils!

If you know me personally, you’ve probably already heard about it. I have recently been introduced to Young Living Essential Oils, and I am in love! I know that’s almost obnoxiously dramatic, but for good reason.

Our family tries to live as naturally as possible. We avoid prescription medicines and even OTC stuff as much as possible. And in our quest for health, we have used many different herbal remedies and even homeopathics. But nothing we’ve used compares to the concentrated power that these therapudic-grade essential oils have!

In the past couple months since I’ve started using them, they’ve become a part of our daily life. We use them to maintain our health as well as help with other challenges in our bodies.

In the weeks to come, I will be sharing about how we use certain oils specifically, but for now I want to share with you this graphic on some of the most common uses for the Everyday Oils Kit. (The Everyday Kit is how most people begin their essential oils journey and is an amazing bargain!)
